It is very different experience to control a heavy car like truck, and a light 4 door sedan, also, it is very easy to damage your vehicle, just going too fast over a speed bump could destroy it, just like in a real life!
There is a huge difference between regular games where it is possible to drive a vehicle, and this game. The game focuses heavily on providing the most realistic driving experience possible - and it sure is probably nothing you would expect out of a video game. The only old version that had anything the current version doesn't was when the game was still being created, and the cars had a dirty texture to them. You are not missing anything between the old and new versions. So going back to them means you are only losing things.
The older versions are much worse than what we have now. And to top that off the remaining working ones actually use outdated GM and Pickup jbeams, which have bad handling and are impossible to control.
